Another New York Comic Con is in the books. This Desperate City headed to the Jacob Javitz Center this year as always to take in the sights and sounds of one of the biggest spectacles in pop culture. Beyond the costumes (yes, we have pictures), the usual suspects all showed, major comic book publishers, book publishers, video game companies, massive amounts of vendors selling everything from 20 year old wrestling figures to Rocky styled bathrobes.
It’s been said before but I have no problem reiterating the driving force of why Comic Con is not only important, but it’s also a wonderful trip for those who aren’t necessarily into this thing called nerd-dom as hardcore as the rest of us. A friend and I were talking while there about how, maybe as briefly twenty years ago, there was so little chance of meeting people outside of your own circle that was into anything more obscure than Star Wars or Monty Python. The greatest thing that Comic Con provides (and its recent commercialization both supports and runs at cross purposes of this fact) is an outlet for people who, in regular life, feel maybe just a pinch to the outside of normal. Of course, normal is a ridiculous word to describe human beings, and this great fanfare of fun is the best place to express that sentiment.
I was happy to see a strong showing of characters and costumes from Mass Effect, my favorite (if unfortunately recently much aligned) video game series. Other notable costumes I saw but failed to get a picture of was a nice young lady dressed as a stage coach with ‘Oregon Trail” on the front and the words “You died of dysentery” on the back. For those in the know, this is a quite ingenious costume, for those not, well, look up the Commedor 64 Game Oregon trail from the 80s, and then not laugh as hard when you get the joke!
A quick update on the frequency of Page updates here lately. Some new responsibilities have relegated me to something of a bi-weekly page update. I’m not particularly enamored with it but at least it’s still semi-regular. We also have in the near future the second installment of Streetlight Stories on the way as well, so keep your eyes peeled for that. Now, without further ado, some fun pics from this great event. Enjoy!
